Capricorn Coast
Imagine a region rich in fish life with many species of seabirds that regularly migrate there, abundant marine life like dugong, and different species of marine turtles. Now add sheltered bays, exciting diving sites, island resorts, charter boats galore, breathtaking beaches and amazing natural landscapes. Welcome, you have arrived at the idyllic Capricorn Coast, Queensland, Australia.
The Swain Reefs and Capricorn Bunker Islands are south from the fabulous Whitsundays and Mackay and offshore from the cities of Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg. While the Capricorn Coast is a significant region for marine life, the Swain Reefs are favoured by chartered fishing boats.
Attractions not to be missed when visiting the area include the Botanic Gardens, Rockhampton Zoo, and Koorana Crocodile Farm in Rockhampton as well as the Capricorn Caves, 23 km north of Rockhampton.
Visit the Gem Festival held every August in the town of Emerald and the coastal village at Emu Park in Gladstone. See the stunning sandy beaches at Great Keppel Island or take advantage of the fantastic diving opportunities at Heron Island.
Other sights to see are the 17 km scenic highway between Yeppoon and Emu Bay along the Capricorn Coast and the Doll & Antiquity Museum in Yeppoon.
If sailing is your passion, then take off in your spinnaker in the fairest of weather through the Coral Sea into the new marina and boat yard of Port Marina, Bundaberg, an authorized port of entry for Australia. If fishing is more to your liking, you are spoiled for choices on the Capricorn Coast – freshwater, reef, ocean and estuarine fishing opportunities abound.
