Hinchinbrook
Between North Queensland’s Townsville and Cairns is a superb stretch of rugged coastline. With endless golden beaches, exquisite rainforests and breathtaking views, this area, known as the Great Green Way, has many fantastic towns to visit while enjoying your Great Barrier Reef holiday.
The laid-back town of Ingham is home to sugar cane and crop fields, cattle farms, tropical fruit growing and a thriving fishing and prawning industry. To visit the highest sheer drop waterfall in Australia, Ingham is home to the spectacular Wallaman Falls. Ingham was pioneered by early Italian settlers and still has a strong Italian culture.
For a unique wilderness experience, Hinchinbrook Island is the best. This is where you’ll find the Thorsborne Trail – a challenging trek that attracts walkers from across the world. Hinchinbrook offers a myriad of World Heritage areas, tumbling waterfalls, isolated wilderness and plenty of water activities.
The beach town of Mission Beach has peaceful beaches that never seem to stop. Nearby Dunk and Bedarra Islands are also popular holiday spots. Your road map will show you that Mission Beach in Australia provides the nearest mainland access to the Great Barrier Reef, perfect for enjoying scuba diving, snorkelling and sailing around this amazing playground.
As with much of this area, Innisfail is a relaxed, friendly town surrounded by lush rainforest and stunning reef life. Sugar cane, tea and tropical fruits are grown locally, while prawn, crayfish and barramundi farming is also popular. The Innisfail Airport at Mundoo is just a few kilometres from Innisfail town centre.
